Key Note Speaker: President and Head of Public of Communications (2 people) of the Nuer Party.

Key Note Speaker: President and Head of Public of Communications (2 people) of the Nuer Party.
This has been and probably will be the most interesting meeting we will have. The Nuer party is the official party of the Salafi group. The Salafi group is very similar to the United States Republican party (especially the family values movement) except the Nuer party is based in Islam instead of Christianity. They are the largest Egyptian party by membership.
This was the first meeting that was done in two languages. Arabic and English was used with Professor Hammed as a translator. Overall I was left with this impression of the Salafi party.
1)      Their leadership is very smart and well spoken
2)      They are committed to cleaning up corruption that was ubiquitous in the Mubarak regime
a.       This is extremely important because the front runner (Mussa) was part of the Mubarak regime, and the levels of corruption in Egypt are a major issue.
3)      Much like politicians they will say what the listener wants to hear
a.       I say this because they were asked to comment on the criticism that parties like the Nuer party and Freedom and Justice parties have stepped into the power void created by the revolution but do not represent the revolution at all.
b.      They gave a very eloquent answer about their involvement even before the revolution, and while they were in opposition to Mubarak well before the revolution. They did not join the revolution until the square had been occupied (the pivotal point being the fight to occupy it).
4)      They Plan to implement Sharia Law
a.       I have to qualify this by saying that I have asked many questions about Sharia Law, and although I am not an expert I can safely say that the media completely misrepresents it and most people reading this in the states have only heard a very spun version of Sharia law.
b.      I cannot deny the western world may find the eye for an eye mentality brutal and primitive. However, Sharia law would find court execution non-majority persons (mentally handicapped) brutal and immoral.
5)      They do strongly believe in democracy
a.       The main difference between the Salafi (Nuer) and Muslim Brotherhood (freedom and Justice) is their inner workings. The Muslim brotherhood much resembles the inner political stricter of US parties while the Nuer party is democratic within as well and emphasizes merit within their ranks.
6)      Their treatment of woman is questionable.
a.       In the meeting the Nuer party said that they wish to create a government that enforces the concept that all men, woman, ethnicities, genders, and religions are created equal.
b.      However,  I am very skeptical (so are many Egyptians), because the Nuer party was forced to include one woman member, which is evidence in of itself, but when they showed pictures of the party, instead of the picture of the woman there was a picture of a flower.

Keynote Speaker: Development Economics

Speaker 1: Development Economics using Micro Finance
We spoke with a development economist who deals with micro financing to improve the many slums in Egypt.
She told us how they formed teams in local (normally tight nit areas and how this led to a very low default rate (below 1%). These teams of woman helped each other out and all were pushed to make their installment payments on the micro loan because they would be hurting the group my defaulting and would lose respect in the community. It is getting late so I will be brief.

These micro finance operations are considered by many to be charity. However, their small amounts and high interest rates (40%) reminded me of Payday loans in America, who hold a generally negative connotation. The only differences are that these are given to those without any employment (mostly woman) to start small operations out of their house. the amount starts small but increases as the group of woman pay back their original amount. (they have to "pass" the first level to progress to the second).
The second this that the lender works with the woman to build up their operation slowly with the intention of one day making a legal legitimate business.
I observed that highly saturated areas may star to form micro-economies. I am unsure if this helps the area in the long run by bringing in money from outside the micro-economy, or if no new money is brought into the micro-economy but money leaves through the interest payments. I will have to think about it when I am more alert. Good night.

Museum of History

Today we went to the Egyptian Museum of History (shown above) sadly we could not take photos inside the museum to this is all I have. Although, I have seen much of the collection in books there is no comparison to the real thing. The girth intricate details of the artifacts cannot be truly appreciated from a picture. I found myself wondering just how these massive artifacts were transported into their tombs. Many of them were too large to simply pick up (in my opinion). I asked Dr. Hamed the engineering techniques behind their creation and transportation. He said that know one had asked him this before, but he would find out. I look forward to learning how they were moved. I think that is much a feat as their creation.

Our first room

So we walked into our room, and this was what saw. Fair to say I was blown away.
It is 5:30am here. We are going to eat breakfast and then sleep.

Finally Landed.

We are here, we are jetlagged, and we are ready to rock.
Dr. Hamed got us through customs and security in about 15 minutes.
This was taken in the lounge in Turkey. (the one that was so hard to get into)
This is when we first landed in Egypt.

Istanbul Airport

Had a frustrating but interesting adventure in the Istanbul Airport. Since have a 6 hour layover going into a lounge is almost required. Wifi, hot showers, food etc. Anyway both Hannah and I only brought US dollars, as instructed. The problem was that the lounge only took credit or debit. Neither of us had the funds in our account. Therefore we needed to transfer funds from our savings. Problem was that the atm only allowed withdraws and the free wifi required a phone. After two hours of walking around and trying to solve this (which led meeting a very interesting Eastern European rug designer) we finally got Lara to pay for us with her card in exchange for our American cash. Finally I can relax, eat, and shower.
The moral of the story is keep some money on a visa card when traveling.
good times....

Pre daparture

I want to thank Dane and his family for letting me stay with them. We had a good time, and a bonfire. Plus we got our last "American" food fix with a Chicago deep dish pizza. It was great and I have to say that meeting Dane's high school friends was a blast.

So i got into the Istanbul. Long flight, but I'm here safe.
